By RITASHAPE – Your go-to for shapewear & body confidence
Whether you’ve just come back from a beach holiday or spent the day at the spa, washing your swimwear properly helps keep the colours vibrant and the fit perfect for longer.
Here's how to wash your swimsuits and bikinis the right way, without ruining the fabric or elasticity.
✅ Step-by-Step: How to Wash Your Swimwear
🩱 Step 1: Rinse Immediately After Use
As soon as you take it off, rinse it with cool tap water. This removes:
-
Salt (from the sea)
-
Chlorine (from pools)
-
Sunscreen or oils
💡 Even if you're not ready to wash it straight away, a quick rinse is essential.
🧺 Step 2: Hand Wash Only
Use lukewarm water and a gentle detergent. Never use bleach or strong washing powders.
-
Fill a basin with lukewarm water
-
Add a small amount of delicate fabric detergent
-
Soak your swimwear for 10–15 minutes
-
Gently rub areas like straps or bottoms if needed
🚫 Avoid using regular laundry detergent or fabric softener — they break down elastic.
🌀 Step 3: Rinse Thoroughly
After soaking, rinse again in cool water to remove any soap.
Make sure no detergent is left — it can weaken the fabric.
🚫 Step 4: Never Wring It Out
Instead of twisting or wringing it like a towel:
-
Lay it flat on a clean towel
-
Roll the towel up with the swimsuit inside to absorb water
💡 This keeps the fibres and elastic safe from damage.
🌬 Step 5: Air Dry Flat
Let it dry flat in the shade, not in direct sunlight or on a radiator.
Why?
-
Sunlight can fade colours
-
Heat from dryers/radiators damages elasticity
🚫 No tumble dryer, no wringing, no ironing.
🔁 BONUS TIP: Rotate Your Swimwear
If you're on holiday, rotate between multiple swimsuits.
This gives each one time to dry and return to shape, which keeps them lasting longer.
